He relies heavily on brute force. His strength is on par with Knuckles, maybe more, for he was strong enough to knock the moon off its orbit. He also has some gorilla agility; able to climb around trees and such with ease.
He also has a unknown connection with the Crystal Coconut, but the results are, as mentioned, unknown.
Weakness:
Some time ago, K.Rool tricked DK to drinking a potion that weakens his strength. Cranky Kong developed a antidote that accidentally was spilled in the soil around the banana trees. The bananas now contain the antidote, but only give him a short amount of time to suppress the poison.

He's pretty much a slacker who loves bananas above anything else. While he is a typical brave and heroic hero, and highly caring of his friends and Banana Hoard, he has an explosive temper that overwhelms him to his violent nature to do shocking things, like kidnapping Pauline or stealing Mario toys.
History:
Many years ago, the Donkey Kong Sr. was among a group of Kongs who set to the shores of the remote island, Congo Bongo. But while exploring the tropical island, he came across a temple that held a mystic crystal, shaped like a coconut. Feeling that it had unknown powers, DK Sr. used it to proclaim himself as ruler of Congo Bongo Island, renaming it DK Isle. He even used its power to carve the island's mountain into his likely image.
Years later, after his wife, the late Wrinkly Kong, gave birth to Donkey Kong Jr., he and his son accidentally came across a Warp Pipe that brought them to Earth. Smitten by a young girl, Pauline (Especially since he was going through a divorce) DK Sr. kidnapped her. This angered her boyfriend, Mario, who then took down the ape, and caged him. This is where DK Jr. came in, managing to rescue his pops, and flee back to the pipe....which was in a greenhouse, guarded by someone named Stanley.
As many years passed, DK Sr. became old and fragile to guard the island. With DK Jr. becoming of age, it became obvious for him to take the throne, becoming the new Donkey Kong...wither he likes it or not. One day, DK's golden Banana Hoard was stolen by a fat reptilian pirate, K.Rool, in an attempt to distract him so he can steal the Crystal Coconut. But DK, with the help of his nephew, Diddy, collected the bananas in time to stop K.Rool. And since then, DK had to deal with K.Rool's numerous attempts to steal the crystal.
Some time ago, DK met Mario, after so many years, finding out that he barely aged. Turns out Earth's time flow slower than the Mushroom World, but now time synchronized. DK been invited to every Mario game Peach thrown, giving DK's the chance to prove his rivalry against Mario.
DK also has a girlfriend, named Candy; a girl he knew since childhood. But they have an on and off relation...and it's mostly off. Due to loneliness...and rage, he often kidnaps Pauline from Mario. And just like his father, he finds her pretty.
As of now, he's still forced by Cranky to guard the crystal, day in and day out from K.Rool.
